Christmas Week Walks

Paul and I have had very little opportunity to walk for the last couple of weeks. Weather, meetings, travel etc have done a good job of nuking our walk time. I did get one in today however, which was kind of a relief.

Christmas Eve I'll be going for a Christmas lights walk on some streets near where I live. Should be good. You should do the same methinks!

Happy Christmas!!

Not too often you get to use the word "ambulation" in a sentence :-)

The difference between walking and running

Discovered last week that there's a very fine line between walking and jogging. 5kmh is a brisk walking pace, but if you get above 5.5 then you're essentially jogging. 6kmh is most certainly a jog.

Not important, just proving that we can walk and do science at the same time. We're in it for the greater good. Selfless.

Perhaps we're getting old and slow.

Well we've been walking each day this week which is good, however for the last couple of days we've been below the magic 5kmh mark, which proves we must be getting slower in our old age. Paul blames his new shoes, so we'll go with that excuse for now.

Here's to faster times next week!

Making up for lost time

Well Paul's back from Cheese Land now but we've only managed one walk together this week as it's been a bit busy. Missed walking yesterday because someone was late for a meeting and blew away my free time, so did 2x walks today to make up for it.

Back on the wagon tomorrow again hopefully before the sky opens yet again for another wet weekend. Walk on people!

Necessity is the Mother of Walks

Due to the popped tail light globe on the car, and motivated by the excellent weather today (25 degrees C) I went for a very straight walk to Kmart and back to get a globe. Like retail therapy, only healthier.

Now if only the magic pixies would come and wash the car as well....

New Shoes

It's always a bit weird stepping into a pair of new shoes for the first time. Today I got a walk in after missing yesterday, and remembered to bring the new runners (Reeboks with some sort of crazy air cushion in them).

After the normal unpadded shoes, these felt like I was more bouncing along than walking - was kinda fun in a dorky way. There was also the fact that they're bright white, so with my black work pants I looked like I was wearing two super novas on my feet.

Bit slack with the posting

Apologies it's been 11 days since the last posting here. I have been walking (check the Runkeeper stats), but there have been many things competing for my time over the last couple of weeks. "No excuse", I hear you say. Well that's true enough.

Today was the warmest day since winter ended, though - even wore a hat (riveting, isn't it?).

I'm deciding whether or not to join the Gym downstairs from work - am I committed enough?

Walking and Cycling and the French Connection

Well things have been a little odd lately....

Only one walk in this week, but I went on a short holiday and got in a 12 km bike ride! One of us is off overseas next week as well so we're all over the place for the next few weeks.

I'll do my best to keep on walking. Might even try out the new Gym downstairs....

Felt a little funny while walking on Friday - undies on backwards. Walked anyway.

Walks this week

Well despite the weather we've been getting some walks in this week. Today we took umbrellas with us so we could look like two English Toffees strolling around pointing at stuff. We probably just looked like two blokes with cheap umbrellas.

The weather has not been pretty lately

No walks last week, but managed 2 so far this week. Today a no go however due to some fairly average conditions.  On the plus side, looks like a gymnasium is setting up shop on the ground floor of our building, which is good!  Roll on spring weather and more walks!

Solo walk today

Bumped into a friend as I was walking. Forgot to hit the pause button on Runkeeper. Made my walk look slow. Never mind, was still a good walk.

Walked Uluru Yesterday

Well, I got to go out to the rock yesterday morning. There wasn't enough time to go all the way around, but I did walk about 6.7 kms.

I did track the walk with runkeeper, so check out the map at the address below.

Ayers Rock

I arrived in Yulara today but haven't been to the rock yet. Paul, however walked the whole 12kms around the rock today. I'm hoping to do that on Thursday morning. We'll see how that goes. Might end up at the Olgas instead.

Runkeeper Issues

As all the avid followers of this blog would know (and there must be at least one), we've been tracking our walks with the generally excellent application, Runkeeper. However all has not been well in Runkeeper land of late, especially after the iOS4 and 4.0.1 iPhone updates.

Methinks the multitasking support is not quite 100% yet, with the application effectively "bailing out" during our walks - very frustrating. This is after 2x app updates.

Anyway, now resorted to removing it and re-installing. let's see what happens tomorrow.

Worst walk ever

Sorry, didn't mean to sound like a downer. Went for a walk yesterday- things didn't go so well. First, had to go alone. Next, rained on me and was so windy my umbrella was useless. Froze my bum off. And was busting for a crap.

On the good side, I did make it back without soiling myself. I grasp onto that as a "glass half full" scenario.

iOS4 and the Stats

Paul and I have a new ongoing goal of keeping our walks above 5Km/hr. So far we've been doing ok, but there's been a little glitch in our stats collection. When Apple released the iOS4 upgrade to the iPhone, the Runkeeper App we use was not compatible. They quickly released an update, however it had a few bugs and messed up our stats. They then released another update but still it crashed on us, forcing me to enter the walk manually. Ahhh, technology.

Hope we get a successful capture today.

Also work has been encroaching on our walks and we've been as irregular as a constipated hippo this last two weeks. NO FAIR!

The Lonely Walk of Loneliness

Paul is unwell, so I walk alone. Still, we must fight on in the war against un-skinny-ness. I could go some chips, but shall resist and revel in this small victory.

Off we go.

Walking and Smoking

Tell me this - honestly what's the point of going for a walk if you're going to smoke a cigarette while you're doing it?

Either you want to die young or you don't - STOP PRETENDING.

Your choices are the following:
1/ go home, sit on the couch, chug away on a ciggy scoffing donuts, feeling like you're being over taxed
2/ give up the cigarettes and enjoy a life giving, tax free walk

I gave up smoking when I was 8 years old. Got caught (thank God).

Better weather this week

Looks like today might be a good day for a walk. Waddya reckon?

Velcro is a Western Capitalist Conspiracy.

Paul and I have discovered that Velcro is evil. Not directly evil in itself, but it represents all that is wrong with our society. Allow me to explain.

On our walk we were talking about how nice it would be if we could detach ourselves from situations that were damaging or stressful. We has both experienced crappy days - people yelling at us, putting on pressure to suit themselves, being unreasonable, etc.

Paul said that he had decided to "detach" himself from his worries of the day. I admired that.

That got us to thinking about detachment in general and how in our society it's almost impossible to detach because everything is tied to us, occasionally stopping us from branching out and doing what we feel we'd like to do (responsibilities, the pressures of life, finances, work).

That led us to develop a general feeling of disdain towards attachment - after all we were, for that brief half an hour, detached from our worries, walking - free!

Therefore, as Velcro so easily attaches things to us, things to other things, us to other parts of us we decided that it was evil and a conspiracy to make us more attached.

Velcro is evil as it raised the general level of attachment in the world.

So there.

Sparse Walking Week

Bad weather, being busy with meetings and some illness has conspired to interrupt our walks this week. I think we've only managed two so far. Still, it doesn't stop us from philosophising about the state of the world. The next post will explain out latest epiphany.

Why we like walking - Happy Hormones

I finally found out the secret to why walking works of us. Happy hormone release. It's as good a reason as any other.

Here's a link to the "Victoria Walks" website, which talks about workplace walking!

A walk around Hyde Park

Went to Sydney for a couple of days for a conference and took a couple of walks around Hyde park in the mornings. Not a bad place for a walk, even if it is in Sydney. :-)

A Walk With a Difference

This long weekend there wasn't much in the way of regular walking, but I did get some great exercise carrying bricks up and down a ladder, and walking on the roof to patch up the busted skylights. THANKS HAILSTORM FROM THE DEVIL'S BACKSIDE!!!

Still Walking

Well despite being too busy to blog about it, there's been plenty of walking going on, even the odd bit of cycling. Tomorrow might even be a the day for another stint on the pushy. My legs hurt just thinking about it.

Walking Songs

With all this walking, there has to be a good soundtrack. After a bit of Googling, it's easy to find lots of great walking songs. Here's a great list of songs for your walking pleasure, even sorted into categories, like

"Tougher Walks" - (Take A) Walk on the Wild Side Lou Reed. (doop a doop a doop a doop);
"Favourites" - Walk Like A Man - Bruce Springsteen, Four Seasons, Frankie Valli, Grand Funk Railroad'

and

"Volkswalker Specials" - On the Road Again -- Willie Nelson (for good walks).

We decided it's too hot today, so we're doing those little ankle rotations at our desks instead.

Did walk yesterday though. Here's the stats!

GPS Fail

Paul and I walked again today but the GPS didn't work properly. This is going to throw our stats out and make us look lazier than we already are.

We did manage to dream up some crazy business ideas however - here's one that got rejected.

You know how elite athletes often sit in a bath if iced water to aid their recovery and improve their performance? Well, Paul came up with the idea of a small portable version for ************* CENSORED *****************.

It was rejected because ********************* CENSORED *******************.

Oh well, back to work.

What's with all the poo?

I'm wondering if the Man upstairs is trying to tell us something?  We saw this on Wednesday's walk - it's obvious his car got caught in "the cloud"!

About Caravan covers

This week, thanks to Chadwise Gamgee, I have learned a few things about caravan covers. First off all, unexpectedly, it is the best entertainment for your wife and family. Hold on, I will explain. But first, a few rules when buying a caravan cover, or a car cover for that matter.

1. Don't be afraid to part with some cash and buy a cover from your caravan dealer; you will avoid some embarrassing moments
2. If cash is an issue, and you need to do it yourself, MEASURE the caravan before to go to the hardware shop
3. Don't buy the biggest one, just to be sure it will fit. Size doesn't always matter
4. If you didn't follow the first 3 rules and you are at home with a sheet of plastic the size of your garden, seek help!
5. Cizzors are considered help in this matter
7. Take a GPS in case you are lost under the plastic.
8. Take a bottle of water as well, can be hot under there
9. Do it at night when nobody is watching
10. Ok let's assume that you finally got it on your caravan. When walking back to your house with a grin of satisfaction on your face, you will realise that your family had the time of their live watching you doing this.

Who needs the Simpsons!!!

2010 - a Crappy Start?

Our walk today was very pleasant, about 31 degrees, overcast, great way to end the working week. It was very pleasant until we reached the Oval. Not unlike stubborn children, we kept going our usual way despite having to go through a cloud of shit! The oval was getting fertilised, and with the wind blowing our way, we got fertilised as well. I cannot describe the lingering smell that still surrounds me as I write these lines. Even my computer is looking… unpleased. My door is closed. I have the phone on my ear without anyone at the other end, just so nobody comes in my office and says “What is this smell?” I would have to lift my left arm, smell a bit and answer “I don’t know!”

We track our walks on Runkeeper.com
